Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin‘s Crash Landing On You has kept on enjoying high TV ratings as its Sunday’s episode obtained a nationwide rating of 9.2 percent, which translates to an estimated 2.4 million viewers.
The rating of the sixth and latest episode beat the 8.7 percent recorded by the fifth episode on Saturday night. It is now the highest rating of Crash Landing On You so far in its 16-episode or 8-week run.
This recent achievement of Crash Landing On You makes it the only cable drama in 2019 to surpass the 9 percent mark in viewership within six episodes or three weeks. Both Hotel del Luna and The Crowned Clown—2019’s top 2 highest-rated Korean dramas in cable TV—took four weeks to score a similar success.
Meanwhile, the soaring popularity of the series outside Korea has become palpable online, with most international viewers giving it positive reviews because of the impressive performance of the lead actors and the better-than-expected portrayal of North Korea. The drama is available on Netflix.
Written by Park Ji-eun (My Love From The Star) and directed by Lee Jung-hyo (Romance Is A Bonus Book), Crash Landing on You tells the love story of South Korean heiress Yoon Se-ri and North Korean army officer Ri Jung-hyuk played by Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin, respectively. Its story unfolds when a paragliding accident brings her to North Korea where she meets the soldier who decides to protect her and keep her illegal entry into the country a secret.
The first six episodes of the series focused on the heiress’ unexpected stay in a small village far away from Pyongyang as she waits for a chance to leave the country without the authorities knowing. During this time, Captain Ri and his company—composed of four juniors portrayed by Yang Kyung-won, Lee Sin-young, Yoo Su-bin, and Tang Joon-sang—has grown on her. Her connection with the captain, in particular, has slowly gone beyond friendship.
Crash Landing On You airs at 9 pm Korean Standard Time every Saturday and Sunday on tvN. It will conclude on February 2, 2020, and be followed by Hi, Bye Mama!, a fantasy series starring Kim Tae-hee and Lee Kyu-hyung.
